Suffice to say, the 1993 Western Ontario Newspaper Award I received for Excellence in Entertainment Coverage wasn't determined or contaminated by any opera coverage.
Researcher In 1998, I was hired by The National Film Board as production manager and researcher to help them with a Canadian music business documentary, a work currently in progress (producer Peter Starr/director Su Rynard). This required extensive music industry knowledge, and did not involve opera. If you want thorough research and the best contacts for your film project, contact me.
Record companies hire me for the unique twist I put on artist biographies. You can read about The Philosopher Kings fan diary, about Malcolm Burn's pool proficiency and about Andy Curran's dog Sophie. I provide informative and entertaining background information for record company media kits, tailor made to attract attention. Satisfied clients include Alert, Anthem, BMG, EMI, Sony and Warner. I've also designed marketing newspapers, sell sheets and press kits. In 1994, EMI Music Canada hired me to write, design, edit and produce an eight-page marketing newspaper to promote a new compilation called "Scoop This Music Too." Over 3000 copies were distributed to clubs and high schools.
Need a print program for your awards show? I recently wrote and edited the 1999 Canadian Country Music Awards print program in association with Entis Communications. Highlights include intimate profiles of such marquee nominees as Shania Twain, Terri Clark and The Wilkinsons and a feature on the state of independent country music in Canada. But that's not all. Included was a new invention: a two-page board game based on the prosperity and pitfalls of the Canadian country music industry called "Saddles 'N Spurs." If you landed on a spur, you could a) lose your drummer, b) land in hospital courtesy of "Bubba" the unfriendly bouncer, or c) go back to where you started from, The Money Pit. But if you landed on a series of saddles, eureka! You galloped toward The Land O' Green and untold fame and fortune. Other print program contributions: the 1996-1998 Canadian Country Music Awards, and the 1998-1999 Juno Awards. Lectures If you need someone to describe the difference between a woofer and a tweeter, or to outline the realities and emerging trends of the music business, then contact me.
WHAT I CAN DO FOR YOU...
In a bind? Last minute deadlines? Need a timely turnaround? Look no further. If you require someone to get into that Backstreet Boys press conference or a quick pick-up interview, I'm rarin' to go. Serving as the full-time The Hamilton Spectator music critic from 1986-1994 trained me for overnight deadlines and quick turnarounds, which included features, profiles, analysis, concert and album reviews, and press conference coverage. Trends, tastes, technology, travel -- anywhere, anytime... Not just about music or movies. A four-month stint on the police desk provided training and experience as a news reporter for topics outside entertainment.
Need a quick press release, newsletter, or brochure? Or something more substantial such as an annual report? I can help you reach your target audience with clear, concise and entertaining copy, articulating your needs in easy-to-read text. Eye-catching designs and appealing fonts thanks to the magic of Quark Express can also be negotiated.
I can provide the three Rs of film and television: Research. Rewrites. Music Supervision. Okay....two Rs. A 5000+CD collection and a Rolodex of solid music industry contacts are an invaluable asset to any filmmaker/television production office looking to track information.
Looking for the perfect ghostwriter? Someone who is willing to stay in the shadows, and can edit and proofread with the best of them? Let's talk.
Under the gun? Let me take some of your load for biographies and press releases.
